Now that Vol 12 Nos. 1 & 2 has been out awhile, I'm getting ready to start another RTR and I'm thinking this issue might have a little more Iowa content that usual. Although it's the next state west from RTR's Home Office in Mendota, Illinois, Iowa has remained somewhat of a mystery to me since I started driving west in the seventies. Nonetheless, the warm welcome I've received there from Rock Islanders, tractor pull fans and Case tractor collectors makes it one of my favorite road trips. And little by little I'm getting my bearings in the 'Land O' Corn'
US 34 out of Mendota takes us southwest right to the Big Muddy at Burlington, Iowa. Case had their Combine Works there until they got out of the harvesting business and converted the works to produce construction equipment like backhoes and crawlers. Always wondered how or if the Rock Island served the plant?
So get ready for some BCR&N, a little Ainsworth Cut-Off, and some awesome Rock Island photos from the Hawkeye. And if you have photographs of Case flatcar loads from the sixties or seventies...don't be shy about letting me know!
Thanks to all you Rock Islanders who have renewed your subscriptions! If you haven't and yours expired with V12 Nos. 1 & 2, best renew soon!
